Maverick Distilling 6-Year Four Grain Bourbon
Age: 6 Years • Proof: 106 • MSRP: $56
Story:
Samuel Maverick’s Four Grain Texas Straight Bourbon is built from a mash bill of 51% corn, 20% Abruzzi rye, 19% hard red winter wheat, and 10% malted barley. It’s aged six years and bottled as a single barrel. The barrels mature in two different environments—the underground Lockwood vault and the Fowler rickhouse—which gives each bottle its own personality. Every release is marked with an L or F so you know where it spent its years resting.
Nose:
Dusty caramel (is that a thing?) sits up front, followed by burnt sugar, charred oak, hay, and a soft rose note. The nose really evolves with time in the glass—starting dusty and woody, shifting into a warm sweetness, and finishing with a gentle floral and herbal lift. It’s one of those pours you catch yourself just smelling over and over because it keeps unfolding. They should make a candle out of this nose.
Taste:
Lightly sweet caramel leads the way with a buttery edge. Cinnamon red hots kick in at the back of the palate, and an herbal mint note lingers on the finish. Just like the nose, the tastes continued to change and evolve over time. The finish itself is dry without leaning tannic, nudging you right back in for another sip. Mouthfeel sits comfortably in the middle—not thin, not heavy—just balanced
Conclusion:
The complexity on the nose alone makes this pour worth slowing down for. Since each bottle is a single barrel from one of two aging locations, I’d love to taste an L and an F side by side someday to see how they differ. I’m not sure which one my sample came from, but it was a genuinely enjoyable experience.
This isn’t a mindless, background-sipper—it’s something I want to sit with and explore. That said, it would also shine in a thoughtful Old Fashioned or Manhattan where the whiskey takes the lead..
